The Story of Film: An Odyssey is a documentary about the history of film by Mark Cousins.

'The director and narrator, Mark Cousins, a film critic from Northern Ireland [...], aims for comprehensiveness and coherence. He wants to tell the whole story, from Genesis to Revelation, as the saying goes, but he also wants this vast chronicle to have a shape and a point: themes and patterns amid the names, places and images. He succeeds to an impressive extent. The results of his dogged research, compulsive travel and hard thinking are exemplary, useful and sometimes thrilling.'

Year 1 + 2 assemblage and montage in moving image design

Date: Tue 06.12. | Begin 10.00 hrs

During the last weeks, you exercised your skills in framing shoots, choosing angles and creating relations through montage.

This is the last exercise: video black and white, diegetic sound (may also be music), as little as possible dialogue, you may use zoom, you may use moving camera, you may use visual match and blends, you may use match to action, you may use match to sound, this time you are also allowed to experiment and create an assemblage of two shots in one frame composition. You may also use a still and insert the moving image in one part of the still.

Choose your frame and technique carefully. Be prepared to explain why you made choices. Also, you will have to articulate the reasons for the interconnecting themes. I am looking forward to seeing your clips!
